Jack Roush Injured in Wisconsin Plane Crash…

By Steve, July 27, 2010 10:33 pm

MILWAUKEE — NASCAR team owner Jack Roush was in serious but stable condition after walking away from a plane crash in Wisconsin on Tuesday night. “There are injuries. Possible surgery,” Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith said in a text message to The Associated Press. “But he walked out of the plane.”

According to the EAA, the National Transportation Safety Board and Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that two occupants on board were Roush and Brenda Stricklin of Plymouth, Mich.

“Each exited the aircraft following the accident,” the statement said. “Both were transported to local hospitals, with Roush in serious but stable condition and Strickland with non-life threatening injuries. The NTSB is leading the investigation into the accident.”

The Beechcraft Premier jet pancaked onto the runway and broke in half and no flames or smoke were seen, according to the aviation news website AVweb.com. Jason McDowell, an aviation photographer who was at the airport, tweeted a photo of team co-owner Jack Roush exiting the plane with a bloody face.

LaDainian Tomlinson And Jimmie Johnson Have Their First Child

By Swasted, July 7, 2010 10:07 pm

LaTorsha LaDainian Chandra Jimmie Tomlinson Johnson

LaTorsha LaDainian Chandra Jimmie Tomlinson Johnson?

Today, Wednesday July 7th, two great San Diego athletes, LaDainian Tomlinson and Jimmie Johnson enjoyed the birth of their first child. Unfortunately, instead of using their combined wealth and the wonderful technology of the 21st century to form a super-athlete, they impregnated their respective wives (LaTorsha Tomlinson, Chandra Johnson).

It’s the first child for both couples but each are sneaky in their own way.

For the Tomlinson’s, we’re not sure if its a boy or a girl but Daylen was born to LaDainian and LaTorsha. Congratulations to LT and his wife. It’s going to be a rough year for the former San Diego Charger and new New York Jet. Fighting for playing time on the field and sleeping time at home.

Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson’s wife Chandra gave birth to a baby girl but no name was released.

Just like Kevin and Joey, Kevin and Matt got together in the past. They bumped each other under caution at Pocono, and Kevin spun Matt afterward. Kevin wore the shirtto the next race so Kenseth didn’t beat the shit outta him.

ESPN’s Marty Smith Catches Up With Brian Vickers

By Swasted, June 3, 2010 6:55 pm

NASCAR reporter Marty Smith just posted a great article about Brian Vickers on ESPN.com. It gives some good insight to Vickers’ medical situation and the events leading up to his hospitalization last month. Vickers has a unique perspective on the whole situation which seems to be influenced by his experiences with the deaths of close friends Adam Petty and Ricky Hendrick. Doctors haven’t diagnosed what caused his blood clots to form so although Vickers’ said he be back by the 2011 Daytona 500, no timetable has been set…no mention of Erin Bates either.

Vickers can’t fully move on. His doctors still don’t know what caused the blood clots, which began in his legs and moved to his lungs. They’ve analyzed and reanalyzed the activities that led up to the clotting — the fire at Texas Motor Speedway after the blown tire, running two races at Talladega in one day, long flights.

“It’s funny, I go to the hospital in Washington and it’s all business,” Vickers said. “They ask every question they have to ask, every procedure, doesn’t matter whether they think they know the answer to it. They’re like, ‘Were you in a car accident? Have you been around smoke? Have you been in a car for a long period of time? Have you been on long flights?’ I was like, ‘Yes!’ They were like, ‘To which one?’ I said, ‘All of them.’ “

Brian Deegan And Metal Mulisha Coming To NASCAR

By Swasted, June 2, 2010 7:39 am

Watch out, Matt Kenseth! According to ESPN.com, Brian Deegan will be joining NTS Motorsports and begin his stock car development with hopes of joining the Sprint Cup circuit soon.

From ESPN.com via TWMX.com:

Deegan announced at Charlotte Motor Speedway that he will be joining the NTS Motorsports driver development program with the objective of moving through the ranks of NASCAR to Sprint Cup as quickly as possible. Deegan will become part of a two-car program that NTS fields, along with current driver Brennan Newberry.

Deegan, as usual, was very open about his view of this opportunity. “When NASCAR chairman Brian France told the world that NASCAR is a contact sport, we’re going to loosen it up, I’m not sure Mr. France knew what he was getting into. I took that as a personal invitation for guys like me. I love racing, I love going fast, I love pushing the limit and that’s what I’m going to bring to NASCAR. I have been designated as the General of the Metal Mulisha and so the Metal Mulisha army is going to march on NASCAR,” Deegan said.

When former regional NASCAR racer James “Jimmy” Neal was arrested last month after leading police on a high-speed chase, it was apparently no fluke. Neal was released from custody on Monday after spending two weeks in jail but was arrested again just hours later on attempted rape charges.

From ESPN.com:

Neal allegedly went to the home of a woman and was arrested around 6 a.m. after deputies responded to a report of a man and woman fighting.

The 56-year-old San Clemente man complained of chest pains and was briefly hospitalized before being returned to jail. Bail was set at $1 million. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer.

Brian Vickers To Miss The Remainder Of 2010 NASCAR Season

By Swasted, May 21, 2010 4:48 pm

Brian VickersOne week after being hospitalized for blood clots in his legs and lungs, it was announced today that Brian Vickers will miss the rest of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup series.

Casey Mears filled in for Brian Vickers last week, racing the #83 Red Bull Toyota to a 22nd place finish at Dover. Though no formal announcement has been made it is believed he will continue to drive for the remainder of the season with the possibility of bringing in a road course specialist for Sonoma and Watkins Glen.

From Yahoo Sports:

Vickers was hospitalized with chest pains during a visit to Washington, D.C., last week. Further tests discovered the blood clots, and he sat out last weekend’s race at Dover.

Vickers said on Friday that after returning to North Carolina last Saturday, he had a recurrence of chest pains and was readmitted to the hospital for two nights.

Vickers says the decision was then made for him to sit out the rest of the season.

Best of luck to Brian Vickers during his recovery and I hope to see him back next year. Vickers himself vowed to be back next year, “I do expect to be back in the car next season, and to win the Daytona 500.”

The Onion’s History of Technical Problems In NASCAR

By Swasted, May 21, 2010 4:30 pm

This was originally posted on The Onion a couple years ago but since it’s NASCAR’s All-Star weekend, I thought it warranted a re-visit, enjoy!

Technical Problems Throughout NASCAR History

An as-yet undiagnosed tire-related issue meant that NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 was a minor disaster, but it isn’t the first time mechanical setbacks have struck the least advanced form of motorsport:

1950: Due to both steering and visual problems, two cars collide violently in the middle of a race

1971: Window netting adopted following the tragic decapitation of Wally Hucklepup, Richard Petty’s beloved coon hound

1975: To fight the problem of track debris accumulating in the bodywork, NASCAR bans the El Camino from competition

1979: When Cale Yarborough’s secret turbo is stolen by the Jethro Brothers, Bo and Luke must outwit Boss Hogg to get it back—without breaking parole

1981: Dadgum thing just up and quit workin’ on me; never happened when my cousin owned it, I tell you what

Ex-NASCAR Driver Leads High Speed Chase, DNF’s

By Swasted, May 19, 2010 12:51 pm
James Neal - Speed Demon

James Neal - Speed Demon

Under different circumstances, one could say it was a dream come true. After nearly 30 minutes behind the wheel of his Chevy, James “Jimmy” Neal was in the lead. Although, it had been some time since he had found himself in this position, he seemed to be in control. The only thing that could get between him and the checkered flag would be some type of mechanical failure. Then it happened. The engine began to sputter and miss and Neal was forced to bring the car to a halt. Another DNF. Only instead of heading down pit road and into his stall with his anxious pit crew, Neal hung a right and exited the 805 south at La Jolla Village Drive.

You see, this was no dream and Neal wasn’t back racing at Ascot Park track in Gardena. This was the 805 freeway in San Diego and the cars Neal was in front of belonged to the California Highway Patrol. Just 30 minutes earlier around 3 a.m., an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy tried pulling over a black 2003 Corvette, on Interstate 5 just north of Avenida Pico in San Clemente, that was missing a front license plate. Rather than pulling over for the fix-it ticket, the driver proceeded to lead deputies on a chase south towards the San Diego County border. After entering San Diego County, the O.C. deputies were replaced by CHP officers. The chase continued down the 5 to the 805 reaching speeds up to 140 m.p.h. before Neal blew his engine and was forced to exit at La Jolla Village Drive.

According to his website, jimmynealracing.us,

“Jimmy Neal, a 3X NASCAR champion with a record of 11 victories in a row in 1981, has come back from battling alcoholism, put his life together, and went out to race again in 2008 after 21 years off the track.”

“3X NASCAR champion with a record 11 victories in a row…” may not be the most accurate portrayal of Neal and his racing career. In reality, Neal never won a national NASCAR race. Instead, Neal spent time in the early 80’s racing in regional NASCAR race series’ like Winston West and Southwest Tour. Neal retired from racing in the 80’s but returned in 2008 after 21 years away from racing.

On Tuesday, James Neal, 56, of San Clemente pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor evasion while driving recklessly and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years’ probation.
