Ex-Champ Arrested at Hot Dog Eating Contest…

By Steve, July 4, 2010 12:30 pm

Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut took the honors at the annual Nathan’s July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest. But not without some controversy.
Chestnut’s main competition, Takeru (The Tsunami) Kobayashi, who was sidelined due to a technicality apparently rushed the winner’s circle part of the stage after the contest, and was hauled away by police, reported by the New York Daily News. Yet another reason why the terrorists hate us.

Citibank Hates Americas Youth…

By Steve, January 7, 2010 7:21 pm

burn_citibank‘Tis the season to gripe about college football. But this year, the grousing isn’t about the lack of a playoff system. After all, the national championship is between the (almost) undisputed No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country. But it’s sponsored by Citigroup. Citigroup, “which needed about $50 billion of our money to stay in business and has repaid less than half of it,” an incensed Loren Steffy writes in the Houston Chronicle. It’s not just the questionable use of funds that bothers Steffy; it’s the fact that Citigroup, and the other banks that sponsor college bowl games (Capital One, GMAC), are associating their services with higher education, a community they have proven eager to fleece. Steffy rails against on-campus pitches for high-interest credit cards and high-fee bank accounts, not to mention the practice of selling “private student loans” to unsuspecting students. Private loans, much like subprime mortgages, appear to be a great deal, until the unfixed interest rates skyrocket. And who is one of the biggest underwriter of private student loans? Citigroup. “The winner of the BCS championship game won’t be determined until Thursday night,” Steffy writes, “But the loser’s already decided. It’s us.”

Pre-World Cup Banter Heats Up…

By Steve, December 11, 2009 10:33 am

articleInlineShort of a few friendlies scheduled in the new year (the United States is looking to play the Netherlands in March), the six months before the World Cup will be filled with banter and speculation, with a few club clashes featuring headline-worthy individual matchups (Tim Howard’s Everton against Jermain Defoe’s Tottenham side on Feb. 28) that might foreshadow World Cup rivalries.

America Wins NY Hot Dog Eating Match

By Steve, July 4, 2009 11:46 am

Reigning champ Joey Chestnut has logged his third consecutive win in Coney Island’s annual hot dog eating contest with a world-record 68 franks.
He defeated his archrival, six-time titleholder Takeru Kobayashi (tah-KEHR’-roo koh-by-YAH’-shee), in Saturday’s bout. Chestnut led throughout the contest.
Last year’s event initially ended in a tie, with Chestnut and Kobayashi both gobbling down 59 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Chestnut went on to win a dramatic five hot dog eat-off.
This year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest was broadcast live on ESPN.
