Monday Links – Pete Carroll, Noah Lowry, Khalil Greene, NY Jets Scouting Report

By Swasted, January 11, 2010 10:22 am

pete-carroll-p1Pete Carroll Resigns - One of the most successful coaching runs in college football history has come to an end. Pete Carroll has left USC and is expected to become the head coach with the Seattle Seahawks. According to sources, Carroll handed in his resignation to USC Sunday evening. In nine years at USC, Carroll went 97-19, winning two national championships and seven Pac-10 titles. Carroll and USC have yet to comment. Carroll has twice been a head coach in the NFL before, spending one year with the New York Jets and three years with New England Patriots. USC athletics director Mike Garrett is expected to contact Oregon State head coach Mike Riley, Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio as possible replacements. – USCFootball.com

Padres Request Noah Lowry’s Medical Records - I think Noah Lowry could be a good fit if he’s healthy. I’m also interested to see what sort of deal Mark Mulder is able to get. Either one would benefit from pitching half their games at PETCO. Mulder isn’t mentioned in this article but he’s returning from a pair of rotator-cuff surgeries and has only pitched 12 2/3 innings since 2006.

From MLB.com – The Padres are one of several teams who have shown an interest and requested medical records on left-handed starting pitcher Noah Lowry, who hasn’t pitched since the 2007 season because of injuries. Lowry’s agent, Damon Lapa, said Friday that Lowry will throw for teams in a private audition later this month in Arizona. Lapa said that he wouldn’t take any offers for his client before that session. “I think it’s safe to say Noah would be open to the possibility of pitching for the Padres,” Lapa said. “… San Diego would not be a difficult sell for us.” That’s because Lowry once lived in Mission Valley, just east of downtown San Diego, and still counts current Padres starting pitcher — and former Giants teammate Kevin Correia — as a very good friend.

khalilKhalil Greene Signs 1-year Deal With Rangers - The Texas Rangers have agreed to terms with free-agent infielder Khalil Greene on a one-year contract worth $750,000, according to a source. The deal is pending a physical. Greene played in 77 games for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2009 and hit .200 with six homers and 24 RBIs in 193 at-bats. He had eight errors. His season was hampered by two stays on the disabled list for social anxiety disorder. His best season was in 2007 with the Padres, when he played in 153 games and hit .254 with 27 homers and 97 RBIs. In 2,567 career at-bats, Khalil has 90 HRs, 352 RBIs and .245/.302/.422. – ESPN.com

CheerleadersScouting the NY Jets - In this era of pass-happy teams, the New York Jets are a throwback to the days when the formula for winning was running the ball and playing defense – two things these Jets do extremely well. They ranked No. 1 in the NFL in six major statistical categories – rushing yards; fewest total yards allowed, passing yards allowed, first downs allowed, third-down conversion percentage allowed and points allowed. – NCTimes.com

Friday On A Wednesday – Chargers Sign Runyan, Runyan Announces Retirement, Tate Update, Antonelli’s Blog

By Swasted, November 25, 2009 9:52 am

Chargers Sign 13-year Veteran Tackle Jon Runyan, Clary Placed On IR – The Chargers last night placed right tackle Jeromey Clary on injured reserve and signed 13-year veteran Jon Runyan, who it turns out has long been an object of their desire.

Immediately after Sunday’s game in Denver, when a preliminary diagnosis regarding Clary’s left ankle was given to General Manager A.J. Smith, the team contacted Runyan, sources said yesterday.

A contract was offered before the team’s plane took off for San Diego on Sunday night, terms were agreed upon Monday afternoon and Runyan signed the contract upon arriving at Chargers Park early last night, the sources said. – SignOnSanDiego.com

Runyan Announces Retirement, To Run For Congress – Less than 24 hours after signing a contract with the San Diego Chargers, Jon Runyan has announced that he will retire after the season and run for a Congressional seat in N.J. – ESPN.com

Padres First-round Draft Pack, Tate, Has Another Surgery – Donavan Tate had surgery to repair a sports hernia on Oct. 7th. It’s the second surgery he’s had since being drafted in June but is expected to be 100% by Spring Training. I’m not sure if he has a invitation to the Big League camp in his contract? – SignOnSanDiego.com

Matt Antonelli’s Blog – Courtesy of GasLampBall, former 1st-round pick (#17 overall) Matt Antonelli has a blog that has some interesting stuff on the life of a prospect/minor leaguer. There’s also video of his first major league hit off of Greg Maddux and as an added bonus Vin Scully has the call, pretty cool. I’m pulling for him to have a strong 2010 season and to be ready to take over for Eckstein in 2011. Now the bad news, he’s a Patriots fan. – Matt Antonelli’s Blog

By Steve, November 3, 2009 12:45 pm

Leaders from five cities along Highway 78 agreed Monday to explore ways they could cooperate financially to help Escondido build a large stadium that would keep the San Diego Chargers in the region.
During a special meeting Monday that was closed to the media, officials from Escondido, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista and San Marcos discussed how a stadium would benefit North County as a whole and what the hurdles are to such an ambitious project, Escondido Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler said.

By Swasted, September 29, 2009 9:08 pm

Stadium Meeting Between Chargers, Escondido city officials and Developer Goes Well - NCTimes.com
“We knew this was a major developer who was going to ask the difficult questions, which they did,” Fabiani said. “And we answered those questions as best we can. We didn’t expect a verdict today. This is a complicated project, and people have to go back and evaluate it. But clearly, people understand the idea and are interested in it.”

Escondido City Council Approves In-N-Out Sign
An In-N-Out company official at the meeting said strong cooperation from the city could allow the new restaurant, which would be located at Valley Parkway and Interstate 15, to open in less than six months. On such a time line, Escondido residents would be eating In-N-Out burgers in their own city by late February or early March. Full Story

Sunday Morning Links

By Swasted, September 20, 2009 9:24 am

Late afternoon golf at Vineyard yesterday wore me out. Add in a pitcher of X and some Hot Wing pizza at Slices and then back home for a couple yellow dogs and a BT and I was out…

The beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad so I had another for dessert…

Peavy Wins White Sox Debut – No shit? I’ve heard that guy is pretty good – Box Score

The Padres beat the Pirates 2-1 yesterday, it wasn’t on TV but it doesn’t sound like anything too exciting happened. Clayton Richard pitched 6 solid innings allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 3 BB and 5 SO and then the bullpen threw 3 scoreless innings to wrap it up. I’m surprised Luis Durango hasn’t gotten a chance to play anymore since his 3-hit performance on Wednesday but then again, I’ve never been a big fan of Bud Black’s roster management skills.

Jamal Williams Placed On IR, Done For the Season…Career? – The Chargers placed DT and bad ass Jamal Williams on Injured Reserve yesterday ending his season and taking whatever wind was left out of the sail’s of the Chargers 2009 season…and we’re only in Week 2. I’m not saying the Chargers won’t still make things interesting, I’m just saying shit going to be real tough now. Coach Rivera will have a chance to really mix things up…Go Bolts! Full Story

Chase Kicks Off In New Hampshire – The Chase, NASCAR’s play-off system, kicks off today in New Hampshire. Juan Pablo Montoya won the pole in qualifying with Tony starting next to him. JPM was the fastest car in all 3 practices so I’m surprised to see him still sitting at 25-1 to win the race. I may need to re-load the ol’ Sportsbook.com account.

Huskers Blow It – The Huskers blew it yesterday losing to Virginia Tech 16-15. VT took the lead in the end with 0:21 remaining after the Nebraska offense failed to find the end zone and had to settle for 5 field goals and ZERO touchdowns. You can’t do that and expect to win the game. Nebraska also had a 1st and goal at the 6 but 2 holding calls and 2 false starts later and the dumbasses had to punt. Ugh…

Are the Chargers Coming to Escondido?

By Swasted, September 10, 2009 4:51 pm

Just read an article on NCTimes.com that says Escondido has been added to the short list of cities that the Chargers are looking at to build a new stadium. The team’s general counsel, Mark Fabiani, said Escondido is being considered because it’s on the Sprinter rail line and has freeways that provide easy access to San Diego, coastal North County and Riverside County.

EscoChargers

“The leading potential site for a stadium in Escondido is the industrial area near the Interstate 15/Highway 78 interchange, where the 17-acre Swap Meet site could be combined with adjacent parcels to create the 30-acre to 60-acre site the team needs, city officials said.

The 15-acre to 20-acre stadium would either be surrounded by a series of multistory parking garages, 30 to 40 acres of surface parking or some combination of the two, Fabiani said.” Continue Reading
