Padres 2010 First Player Draft Preview

By Swasted, June 7, 2010 10:07 am

The 2010 MLB First Year Player draft starts today at 4 pm PST. I’m not even going to pretend to pay enough attention to amateur players to have an educated guess on who the Padres will take with the #9 overall pick. 17-year old Bryce Harper seems to be the consensus #1 overall pick for the Nationals despite what some scouts and JUCO umpires may consider a poor attitude. I don’t know the kid but one look tells you he definitely has “makeup” issues.

Friday On A Wednesday – Chargers Sign Runyan, Runyan Announces Retirement, Tate Update, Antonelli’s Blog

By Swasted, November 25, 2009 9:52 am

Chargers Sign 13-year Veteran Tackle Jon Runyan, Clary Placed On IR – The Chargers last night placed right tackle Jeromey Clary on injured reserve and signed 13-year veteran Jon Runyan, who it turns out has long been an object of their desire.

Immediately after Sunday’s game in Denver, when a preliminary diagnosis regarding Clary’s left ankle was given to General Manager A.J. Smith, the team contacted Runyan, sources said yesterday.

A contract was offered before the team’s plane took off for San Diego on Sunday night, terms were agreed upon Monday afternoon and Runyan signed the contract upon arriving at Chargers Park early last night, the sources said. – SignOnSanDiego.com

Runyan Announces Retirement, To Run For Congress – Less than 24 hours after signing a contract with the San Diego Chargers, Jon Runyan has announced that he will retire after the season and run for a Congressional seat in N.J. – ESPN.com

Padres First-round Draft Pack, Tate, Has Another Surgery – Donavan Tate had surgery to repair a sports hernia on Oct. 7th. It’s the second surgery he’s had since being drafted in June but is expected to be 100% by Spring Training. I’m not sure if he has a invitation to the Big League camp in his contract? – SignOnSanDiego.com

Matt Antonelli’s Blog – Courtesy of GasLampBall, former 1st-round pick (#17 overall) Matt Antonelli has a blog that has some interesting stuff on the life of a prospect/minor leaguer. There’s also video of his first major league hit off of Greg Maddux and as an added bonus Vin Scully has the call, pretty cool. I’m pulling for him to have a strong 2010 season and to be ready to take over for Eckstein in 2011. Now the bad news, he’s a Patriots fan. – Matt Antonelli’s Blog

Method Man Accused of Tax Evasion – Pitchfork put it best by saying, “Method Man smokes a lot of weed. This is basically a matter of public record. And when you smoke a lot of weed, you can forget to do normal, everyday things–like pay your taxes.”Story From Pitchfork

San Marcos Restaurant Week – Hit up the 55 Yard Line for their lunch special last Friday and scored a Bacon Burger and Blue Moon for $5.55. Sunday Morning Links

By Swasted, September 20, 2009 9:24 am

Late afternoon golf at Vineyard yesterday wore me out. Add in a pitcher of X and some Hot Wing pizza at Slices and then back home for a couple yellow dogs and a BT and I was out…

The beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad so I had another for dessert…

Peavy Wins White Sox Debut – No shit? I’ve heard that guy is pretty good – Box Score

The Padres beat the Pirates 2-1 yesterday, it wasn’t on TV but it doesn’t sound like anything too exciting happened. Clayton Richard pitched 6 solid innings allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 3 BB and 5 SO and then the bullpen threw 3 scoreless innings to wrap it up. I’m surprised Luis Durango hasn’t gotten a chance to play anymore since his 3-hit performance on Wednesday but then again, I’ve never been a big fan of Bud Black’s roster management skills.

Jamal Williams Placed On IR, Done For the Season…Career? – The Chargers placed DT and bad ass Jamal Williams on Injured Reserve yesterday ending his season and taking whatever wind was left out of the sail’s of the Chargers 2009 season…and we’re only in Week 2. I’m not saying the Chargers won’t still make things interesting, I’m just saying shit going to be real tough now. Coach Rivera will have a chance to really mix things up…Go Bolts! Full Story

Chase Kicks Off In New Hampshire – The Chase, NASCAR’s play-off system, kicks off today in New Hampshire. Juan Pablo Montoya won the pole in qualifying with Tony starting next to him. JPM was the fastest car in all 3 practices so I’m surprised to see him still sitting at 25-1 to win the race. I may need to re-load the ol’ Sportsbook.com account.

Huskers Blow It – The Huskers blew it yesterday losing to Virginia Tech 16-15. VT took the lead in the end with 0:21 remaining after the Nebraska offense failed to find the end zone and had to settle for 5 field goals and ZERO touchdowns. You can’t do that and expect to win the game. Nebraska also had a 1st and goal at the 6 but 2 holding calls and 2 false starts later and the dumbasses had to punt. Ugh…

Cub Busters……

By Steve, August 18, 2009 1:17 pm

cub busters
One night after suffering a defeat at the hands of a rookie’s walk-off home run, the Padres turned the tables.
Kyle Blanks hit a three-run homer in the ninth as the Padres beat the Cubs, 4-1, in the opener of a three-game set on Monday at PETCO Park.
The blast was the seventh of the season for the rookie Blanks, who deposited a 1-1 pitch from Cubs closer Kevin Gregg (4-5) into the left-center-field seats and set off a celebration at home plate as the club snapped a four-game losing streak.

“It’s always nice to get a win, and to do it like that is definitely a nice little bit of momentum in your direction,” Blanks said. “That always feels good, especially a good team win like that. We pitched well, played good defense, and hit when we needed to.”
The Padres have also reeled off four straight wins against the Cubs at PETCO Park after sweeping a three-game set here in May, but the night belonged to the 6-foot-5, 22-year-old Blanks, who has made a strong impression since being called up to the Major Leagues on June 19
