Padres Home Brokener

By Ryan, April 9, 2010 5:22 pm

The UT is reporting that the Padres scheduled Opening Day starter, Chris Young, will miss the big day at Petco Park on Monday due to shoulder soreness following his promising season debut in Arizona.  Homegrown talent Kevin Correia will take the mound instead.

Young, lauded as one of the Padres veteran leaders, hasn’t started more than 20 games since 2007 due to injury, though in that time his annual salary has taken leaps and bounds from $600,000 in 2007 to $4.6M last year.  You can’t blame the guy for the Albert Pujols liner he took to the face in ‘08, but hopefully this isn’t the beginning of perpetual injury trouble for the Padres this year.

Local Team News: Pads re-sign Correia, Chargers Stadium update

By Logert, December 13, 2009 9:14 am

Padres on Saturday reached an agreement with Correia on a one-year deal worth about $3.6 million. – More
Good move, 3.6 is .6 too high, but I’m sure Kev will still produce like last year. The article also says the Padres have tendered contracts to Mike Adams, Heath Bell and Kouz… keep ‘em all, Hoyer! I’d hate to see him go, but you might have to trade A-Gon. And you have to get at least 2 MLB-ready players and 2 prospects. We can’t afford what he’s worth. Peavy anyone?

Chargers stadium site downtown too small to be privately funded? – More
Lame! Apparently, the site downtown is only 10 acres. Too small to build a stadium as well as shops and restaurants to help pay for said stadium. Two stadiums downtown would be so fucking awesome. I might visit SD more often.

Padres’ farm system looking mighty good…

MLB.com’s Postseason Selections: There were two players MLB.com felt were equally deserving of being named Hitter of the Year, so the decision was made to hand out co-recipients of the honor.

Sawyer Carroll, OF: The outfielder taken in the supplemental second round of the 2008 Draft spent time at three levels, beginning in the Midwest League and finishing up in the Double-A Texas League. And he hit everywhere he went, finishing with a .317/.413/.489 combined stat line. Although he hit only eight homers, he did double 40 times, led the organization in batting average, finished second with 96 RBIs and also stole 19 bases.
James Darnell, 3B: Another 2008 draftee — a second-rounder this time — Darnell also got promoted during his first full season, going from Fort Wayne up to Lake Elsinore midseason. Combined he hit .311/.424/.536, finishing fourth among full-season hitters in average, tied for second with his 20 homers and fourth with 81 RBIs.
Simon Castro, RHP: Castro’s full-season debut was a huge success as the tall right-hander went 10-6 with a 3.33 ERA, a .226 batting average against and 157 K’s (vs. just 37 BB) in 140 1/3 innings. He led the Midwest League and finished second in the organization in strikeouts, finished in the top 10 among full-season pitchers in K/9 ratio and fifth in the Midwest League in ERA. – More

Clayton Richard to make Padre debut

By Logert, August 1, 2009 2:28 pm

AP White Sox Indians BaseballSAN DIEGO — A day after the Padres dealt ace Jake Peavy to the White Sox, one of the four pitchers acquired in the trade will make his first start for San Diego.

Instead of preparing to start Friday against the Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field, lefty pitcher Clayton Richard packed his bags for the move to the West Coast.

Richard takes the mound Saturday for the second game in the Padres’ three-game series against the Brewers at PETCO Park. Richard replaces scheduled starter Edward Mujica, who was promoted from the bullpen earlier this week to replace struggling Josh Geer in the Padres’ rotation.

Richard said Friday he was “pretty surprised” to be moving to San Diego after Peavy accepted the trade to Chicago.

“I really just thought he didn’t want to come over here,” he said. “He turned it down and it was put to rest. Then, out of nowhere, it happens again. But I’m excited to go over there. We’ll see how it goes.”

Richard (4-3) has made 26 appearances, with 14 starts, this season for the White Sox. He’s tossed eight innings in each of his two most recent starts, allowing just two runs on nine hits in his last 16 innings of work.

Padres get four from White Sox for Peavy

By Logert, August 1, 2009 1:44 pm

jake-peavySAN DIEGO — The Padres traded away a Cy Young Award winner Friday, but general manager Kevin Towers is hoping that the haul of four young pitchers the team received in return will pay dividends for a long time to come.

“Maybe there’s a Jake Peavy in the bunch.” Towers said.

On Friday, the Padres pulled off a Trade Deadline shocker that didn’t involve their two All-Stars, Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell, who were the central points of talks Towers had with other teams.

Instead, Towers traded Peavy for four pitchers, all under 26, including the prized arm of the deal, 22-year-old left-hander Aaron Poreda.

“For us, we think it was a good baseball deal,” Towers said.

That, of course, remains to be seen, though the Padres were certainly excited to land the four pitchers, Poreda, left-hander Clayton Richard, who will get a start Saturday against Milwaukee, and right-handers Aaron Russell and Dexter Carter.

It was a move White Sox general manger Kenny Williams had been thinking about since May, when Peavy first rebuffed Chicago, using his no-trade clause to veto a deal that he agreed to on Friday.

In order to land Peavy, Williams gave up four pitchers that were part of the White Sox future, pitchers he was excited about.

“To get a No. 1, you have to pay the price,” Williams said. “Clayton Richard, we believe, especially going to the National League and in San Diego’s ballpark, I told him, ‘You are about to be a very successful and rich man. You are going to do well over there.’”

“Aaron Poreda, as well, and Dexter Carter is coming and Russell has improved since you last saw him. So, yes, we paid the price, but I’m not averse to doing that if you get what you want and the opportunity.”

Richard, 25, is 4-3 with a 4.65 ERA in 26 games (14 starts) with the White Sox in 2009. He will slide into the starting rotation.
